For those who have not had success with multiple types of medications, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a service that we provide at our Middletown Clinic. It is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of major depression. It is a noninvasive procedure because it's done without using surgery or cutting the skin. Patients wear a cap on their head, and a provider will stimulate certain parts of the brain, which will feel like small taps on the head. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used when other depression treatments haven't been effective.
